Role Summary
The Agronomist promotes barley production in their respective region and is responsible for the relationship between AB InBev and the farmer, supporting the farmer in the technical and commercial aspects of barley production. From a technical perspective, the Agronomist is responsible for working with Research to provide recommendations and best practices to farmers and implementing farmer-facing programs. From a commercial perspective, the Agronomist is responsible for providing feedback to Procurement to develop the commercial policy, convincing farmers to grow barley based on the commercial policy, getting contracts signed and ensuring barley delivery. The Agronomist should not and will not be involved in any price negotiations.
To ensure the long-term security of these supply chains , the Agronomist aids in the development of farmer programs that address farmer profitability and environmental sustainability and is responsible for program execution and farmer adoption.
Job Responsibilities
Represent ABI in all interactions with farmers and the local farming community
Understand the region from an agronomic, economic and environmental perspective and provide insights back to zone and global teams to be used in the development of the commercial policy, as well as advise the company’s sustainability and SmartAg strategies.
Technical
Advise farmers on crop management and share standard methodologies as the local “barley specialist” to drive productivity, efficiency and quality
Collaborate with Research and Zone/Global Procurement Teams and other Agronomists to develop and execute farmer programs and projects that drive economic, social and environmental shared value.
Collaborate with Research to develop the crop protocols specific to the barley growing region and varieties grown in that region
Collect farm-level data and provide insights and recommendations back to the farmer based on Smart Barley data and insights
Participate in the development of the Smart Barley digital platform, implement digital tools with farmers and provide feedback to Global Procurement and Solutions teams to drive future development
Commercial
Influence farmers to grow barley under the commercial policy set by GPO – variety, volume and quality aligned with business needs – and execute the contracts (gathering needed documentation and signatures)
The agronomist WILL NOT negotiate prices with farmers or distributors/cooperatives
Prioritize and ensure barley delivery in coordination with Supply/Verticals
Identify and develop new barley production areas and new farmers in order to meet volume and quality needs as aligned with commercial needs
Develop the variety strategy for the region in coordination with the Zone Agro Director and Zone Research to ensure adequate seeds inventory to cover the needed volume
Qualifications
University Degree or higher (agronomy degree preferred)
At least 2 years of experience in an agricultural environment
Excellent communication skills written, verbal and presentation
Appropriate mix of technical (agronomic), sales and management skills
Self-starter who can take ownership and work independently
Curious and strong willingness to learn
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to work well with teams and partners
PC skills (MS PowerPoint, Excel & Office)
Judgment: Able to differentiate between conflicting priorities and issues to identify underlying causes
Demonstrated ability to lead multiple tasks and assess priorities optimally
Driver’s license
