Job Description : Job Description
This is a two-year Limited Term (LT) Fisheries Technician position conducting work on inland lakes, Great Lakes, and connecting waters. Principal duties are to assist with activities of the MDNR Grass Carp and Red Swamp Crayfish Response Plan, including conducting fisheries and aquatic habitat surveys inland and in Great Lakes waters. This position assists with surveillance and response actions for Grass carp, Red Swamp Crayfish and other new invasive species. Objectives are to use various sampling methodologies, including acoustic telemetry, netting, electrofishing, and chemical treatments to collect and remove aquatic invasive species from waters of the state.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of an associate’s degree in science with course work emphasis in limnology, ichthyology, aquatic systems, or field biology.

Experience

Fisheries Technician 8
No specific type or amount is required.

Fisheries Technician 9
One year of experience performing technical fisheries management activities equivalent to a Fisheries Technician 8.

Fisheries Technician E10
Two years of experience performing technical fisheries management activities equivalent to a Fisheries Technician, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Technician 9.
Alternate Education and Experience
Fisheries Technician E10
Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher with 16 semester (24 term) credits in job specific or related course work may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Leave Time

Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Paid Parental Leave

Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
