Position Summary:
Facilities Management & Planning (FMP) is responsible for the following: the operations and maintenance of University buildings and grounds; the planning, design and construction of new University facilities and remodels of existing buildings; utilities operations; motor pool operations; property control; equipment inventory; and delivery services. The entire University is the recipient of services performed by FMP. The SOU campus consists of 175 acres of grounds,140 acres of which are under active use and maintenance. FMP maintains 21 major buildings comprising over 1 million square feet of building space. FMP is staffed by 45 full-time personnel and is responsible for approximately 9% of the University’s budget. The Support Services Assistant provides support services to all campus departments. This position is responsible for the delivery of freight, parcels, mail, office supplies, etc.; operating and maintaining a parcel delivery database; furniture and equipment moves; tracking and managing state surplus property; timely completion of campus delivery work requests. This position will also perform backup campus mail services duties as assigned. This position must direct/coordinate/oversee student workers, temporary employees, and interdepartmental help, as necessary, to complete these services.
Minimum Qualifications:
An amiable personality and good communication skills.
A thorough understanding of campus priorities and procedures and the ability to work with little supervision.
Valid Oregon Driver License.
Good driving record – must qualify to drive University vehicles.
Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Ability to operate modern office equipment, including computers for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and email.
The ability to work outdoors in inclement weather; walk, stand, or work while bending and stooping for extended periods.
The ability and willingness to lift and carry heavy objects (frequently up to 100lbs., occasionally above 100 lbs. with proper equipment)
Experience in the operation of a forklift
Experience and ability to interact with a diverse population.
Ability to read labels and MSDS sheets and follow instructions

Minimum Qualifications are not established for this classification. The appointing authority is responsible for recruitment and selection.
Preferred Qualification:
Knowledge of hazardous waste handling pertaining to receipt and delivery of hazardous materials. Also knowledge of hazardous waste as pertains to what can legally be sent to a landfill for disposal or what must be handled through a recycler.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist. Ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical and research skills; ability to gather, evaluate, and to develop well-reasoned conclusions and recommendations. Ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.
Ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
Initiative in independently planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within broadly defined parameters.
Ability to coordinate several functions and determine the relative importance of each; ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media platforms, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization and multiple outside agencies.
Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Ability to provide training and direction to others, as well as student assistants.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
