This position functions in a small team to provide exceptional service to guests at the Coldwater Welcome Center. The Laborer is responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks requiring the use of hand and power tools and motorized equipment in order to assist in the maintenance of Welcome Center facilities, equipment, and grounds. This position also performs preventative maintenance schedules.

This position will operate a motor vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of between 10,001 and 26,000 lbs. while performing some duties.

One year of experience performing duties involving the use of hand tools and motorized machinery equivalent to a Laborer 5.
Alternate Education and Experience
Some positions within this classification series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

Some positions in this classification series may also be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

This position is required to operate a motor vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds. This requires the ability to possess and maintain a valid Medical Examiners Certificate as a condition of employment.

Position may be filled at the 5 or E6 level based on the preferred candidate’s qualifications. The “Salary” listed in this posting is a range and reflects the minimum rate at the entry (5) level and the maximum rate at the experienced (E6) level. The pay rate provided to the preferred candidate will be dependent on the level in which they are found qualified. New employees typically will be quoted at the minimum rate of pay for the level in which they are found qualified, and their pay will increase in increments based on evolution to the next level and satisfactory performance.

All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test and physical (if applicable) prior to their actual appointment. Criminal and driving records will also be checked if applicable. Any position offer will be conditional until results of the drug test, physical, criminal background, and driving records indicate eligibility for employment.

Leave Time

Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year and 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.

Holidays

State employees receive 12 or 13 scheduled paid holidays each year, including New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

Insurance and Other Benefits

Eligible employees can choose from a variety of health insurance plans, including a PPO, HMOs, and a High Deductible Health Plan with HSA (effective January 1, 2021). Other coverage includes vision, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, as well as tax-deferred Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health, prescription, dental and vision eligible expenses, dependent care expenses, and Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefits (QTFB). Employees also have the option to purchase additional life, accidental death, and long-term care insurance, auto/home insurance, identify theft protection, and legal services.

Paid Parental Leave

Provides eligible individuals up to 12 weeks of paid leave immediately following birth or adoption of a child.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from their paychecks.

Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match up to 3%. The Office of Retirement Services administers two different retirement plans for State of Michigan employees: Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC). New hires can also receive up to a 2% employer match into a Personal Healthcare Fund and a lump-sum credit to a tax-deferred account if eligible.
