Job Overview:
The Accounting Supervisor oversees, manages, and administers the City’s accounts payable, cash receipting, and cash management functions; supervises Select accounting staff. Provides support in all areas of the finance office.

Core duties and responsibilities to include:
Oversee, manage, and administer the accounts payable, cash receipting, and cash management functions within the Finance Department.
Oversee process for making semi-annual debt service and bond call payments.
Supervise, assign, and review the work of employees performing accounts payable, cash receipting, and cash management functions.
Provides assistance and backup support to the payroll function as needed.
Perform internal financial and performance analysis of programs and operations.
Responsible for examining the efficacy of existing policies and procedures; proposing suggestions to improve the effects of existing policies.

Requirements for this job include:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, financial management, or related field, and three (3) years” experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience within accounting/finance office.
Or any combination of education and experience equivalent to seven (7) years.
Experience in municipal finance and budgeting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the City of Missoula and public sector financial management principles and practices, including the principles of basic governmental accounting and financial reporting, debt administration, budgeting, payroll processing, and risk management.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision, including hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining.
Knowledge of organizational rules and procedures relating to cash handling and accounts receivable.
Knowledge and ability to promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with City safety policies.
Skill in understanding and interpreting complex laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Skill in prioritizing, planning and supervising work of assigned employees.
Skill in evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of department operations and proposed programs.
Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Skill in effectively communicating, in person and in writing.
Skill in utilizing standard office equipment, personal computers including accounting, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
Skill in developing budgetary, financial, and managerial policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with elected officials, city employees, businesses, and citizens.
