Job Description : Continuing education is currently one of the most exciting, prominent and fast changing fields in global higher education. The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) is an established leader in the field, tracing its roots back to 1873. ICE is based at the historic Madingley Hall campus, four miles west of Cambridge.
Whether mid-career health professionals learning about genomic medicine, mid-life adults seeking to change careers in emerging sectors such as coaching, creative writing or science communication, or retirees studying the history of art or philosophy, ICE provides world-class courses, drawing on the resources of one of the world’s best universities, for adults from all backgrounds.
ICE’s taught portfolio includes in-person, blended and fully online short courses and undergraduate and postgraduate award-bearing courses. In 2020-21 there were over 7,500 course enrolments with a more than a further 25,000 registrations via the edX platform. Since 2018, ICE has led on the creation of and operations around the University’s Apprenticeship agenda. The Institute has ambitious plans to increase student enrolments over the next strategic period, including the growth of technical and vocational education.
We now seek to appoint a Deputy Director (Apprenticeships and Technical Education) focussing on the development of the strategic direction for vocational education, higher technical qualifications (HTQs) and levy-funded apprenticeships, in line with the University’s access and participation priorities and emerging government policy. The role-holder will also ensure the effective and efficient delivery of high-quality HTQs and higher and degree apprenticeships including compliance with inspectorates and regulators such as Ofsted, Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and the Office for Students (OfS).
Working with the Director of Continuing Education (Head of Institute), Director of Academic Centres Division and Deputy Directors for Academic and Student and Professional Services, the Deputy Director for Apprenticeships and Technical Education will engage with employers and regional bodies to determine workforce development needs and ensure curricula are designed in-line with employers’ needs. In particular, they will focus on widening participation in the knowledge economy and professions, within a broader context of adult education and lifelong learning.
A record of achievement in relevant posts within higher education and experience of a leadership role in technical-vocational education within a UK-based HE or FE setting is required. The successful candidate will be a driven and skilled administrative or academic leader qualified to doctoral level in a relevant professional field. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of academic quality assurance systems and procedures, particularly in the context of Ofsted and an awareness of the factors which constitute excellence in teaching and learning in HE, particularly in vocational fields and work-based learning. They will be committed to supporting adult students’ learning and pastoral support.
