About Cleo
Most people come to Cleo to do work that matters. Every day, we fight for the world’s financial health, building a beloved AI that empowers people to make better financial decisions.
Backed by some of the most well-known investors in tech, we’ve reached over 4 million users and plan to double that number each year…which is where you come in.
What you’ll be doing
We are defining our Product Pillar and Platform structure right now and hope to roll that out in the next few months. You’ll be accountable for all engineering needs in our Platform area, which encompasses both engineering effectiveness (e.g. infrastructure, security, developer productivity, scalability), and also data effectiveness (e.g. Business Intelligence, user behaviour tracking, experimentation). As the engineering team grows, we may also need you to lead all engineering needs in any cross-cutting areas that span the entire product.
You’ll work closely with your counterparts in other disciplines (such as data, compliance and commercial) to build high-performing teams that enable our product squads to deliver impact on our company mission in the most effective way possible. You will build out our current team of 2-3 engineers to 10+ engineers by the end of 2022. We will also be hiring data leads to work alongside you, and will be looking to you to identify any additional specialist roles that you will need to support the work of the platform team.
You’ll be responsible for all people management for engineers in the Platform team. This means coaching and developing a mixture of engineering managers, tech leads, junior and senior engineers. You’ll also build out the headcount plan and will be responsible for all hiring and team development within your area to support our growth.
You’ll be responsible for all technical leadership within the platform team and will hold overall responsibility for supporting our systems in production. This means actively seeking out opportunities to improve or optimise our processes, participating in design sessions, reviewing technical proposals and developing the technical roadmap for the platform team. Our existing monolithic backend happily supports 4m+ users, and you’ll help us to help us scale it to support 10m+ users!
You’ll work with the other Engineering Managers in our product pillars on projects that impact the entire engineering organisation, such as iterating on our progression framework, our engineering culture and optimising our processes. You’ll also work closely with the leads in our product pillars to plan the adoption of new tooling and migrations to new infrastructure as needed.
This role is for you if
You have a passion for engineering effectiveness and understand the best practices in the industry. Platform is a new and growing area for Cleo, and we need you to be able to inspire others (up, down and across), whilst staying true to our engineering principles.
You have previously been hands-on, but these days get your kicks from software architecture and organisation design, debugging people and processes, and delivering through others.
You have successfully grown teams to >2x their size, and know how to plan for and prioritise team growth in a sustainable way.
You have experience of scaling systems to support an increase in traffic of at least 2x.
You are a great communicator. We are a tight-knit engineering management team, who support one another to be the best leaders possible. You need to be comfortable challenging and supporting us.
You are comfortable with change and can adapt to constantly changing circumstances. We’re growing the team, and we want you to grow with us on that journey.
You practice a learning and growth mindset. We move quickly and experiment lots, so we need you to help people learn and grow from their experiences.
What do you get for all your hard work?
A competitive compensation package (base + equity) with bi-annual reviews. This position is at EM2 level and we can pay £92,541 – £110,000 p.a depending on experience.
Work at one of the fastest-growing tech startups, backed by top VC firms, Balderton & EQT Ventures.
A clear progression plan. We want you to keep growing. That means trying new things, leading others, challenging the status quo and owning your impact. Always with our complete support.
Flexibility: We can’t fight for the world’s financial health if we’re not healthy ourselves. We work with everyone to make sure they have the balance they need to do their best work
Other benefits:
25 days Annual leave a year + public holidays (+ an additional day for every year you spend at Cleo)
6% employer-matched pension in the UK
Early finish every Friday
Online courses & internal training to level up your skills
Regular socials and activities, online and in-person
Online mental health support via Spill
Access to Pushfar – online platform for external mentorship
And many more!
UK App access: The Cleo app is no longer downloadable in the UK (but only until next year). If you’re an existing user, you’ll still have access to the app. But some features won’t be available (just for a little while). Why? 99% of our users are based in the US – where financial health is often overlooked. We’ve decided to shift our focus to where we can provide the most value and make the greatest impact for users who need it most. Then we’ll be able to apply what we learn to better support our UK users in the future. Check out this page for more information.
