An exciting opportunity has become available for an qualified Clinical Psychologist to work in our growing and innovative paediatric psychology team. You will have specialist experience of working with physical health problems, or experience of working in child and adolescent mental health with an interest and desire to bring that knowledge to work in paediatrics.

Your main duties will include working with the Multidisciplinary Cleft Lip and Palate Service to offer psychological care to children, young people and adults through a consultation with staff and by directly working with patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

Whilst your main base will be at the City Hospital campus, you will also work at the Queen’s Medical Centre and will be required to attend MDT clinics regularly across the Trent region including; Sheffield, Doncaster, Leicester and Derby. You will be part of a Clinical Psychology Department which incorporates specialisms in Paediatric Psychology, Adult Medical Psychology and Child and Adult Neuropsychology.

You would not be expected to have pre-existing experience of working in this area, however, applicants with experience of working with children and who are interested in the emotional impact of physical health are encouraged to apply.

Nottingham Children’s Hospital has 97 beds and cares for around 40,000 children each year from Nottinghamshire and beyond. We treat a full range of conditions including planned treatment and surgeries; emergency surgical/medical treatment; burns and plastics; neurological conditions; oncology; cleft lip and palate; renal conditions and transplantation; spinal and orthopaedic.

There are plenty of opportunities for continued professional development and supervision within the team. We have a number of trainees from the DClinPsy courses at Universities of Leicester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Lincoln, so there would be opportunities to supervise trainees, assistant psychologists and other medical and allied health professional colleagues. You will also be involved in providing consultation, training and supervision to others within and outside of the team. The department has a commitment to clinical research. Strong support is available to participate in research or to develop your clinical research interests.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work autonomously as a Clinical Psychologist within Professional and Trust guidelines, policies and procedures.

To be accountable for own caseload, taking on prime responsibility for the highly specialist assessment and treatment of patients.

To provide a specialist and comprehensive assessment and management of patients with cleft requiring the appropriate use, interpretation/ analysis and integration of highly complex psychological and non-psychological information from a variety of sources.

To communicate highly complex condition related information to patients and their families who may be distressed, due to the nature of their condition.

To provide teaching and training to MDT staff within the Cleft Network both formally and informally.

To maintain standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance.

To represent the department at operational or strategy meetings in the Trust as required by the Head of Specialism or Director of Psychology.

To ensure own individual continuing professional development CPD arranged in consultation with the Director of Psychology.

Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
Post-graduate doctoral level (or equivalent) training in clinical psychology as accredited by the BPS.
HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
Experience
Essential criteria
Working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist in children’s mental or physical health or with adults with physical health problems.
Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
Experience of exercising clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment.
Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision
Experience of carrying out research
Desirable criteria
Experience of assessing and treating patients with long-term physical health problems
Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
