The Faculty Research Manager supports the Vice Dean (Research) and IoPPN Director of Operations (DOp) on the development and implementation of Faculty research strategies and associated policies. The post holder will be a professional specialist in research management, responsible for ensuring the Faculty provides high quality support across a full range of research services, including pre- and post-award and associated cost recovery; advice on funder compliance; research centres; open access; and working with the Associate Dean of Doctoral Studies on the doctoral programmes within the faculty. They will be responsible for setting the quality and development of research management across the Faculty, coordinating this with colleagues across the university.
The post holder will work closely with, and harness support from, resource in the Research Management & Innovation Directorate which provides specialist research support to Faculties. They will help lead on the implementation of new RMID enterprise systems and support the implementation of relevant policies within the faculty. The Faculty Research Manager works across the Faculty, identifying opportunities for collaboration and efficiencies to capitalise on the significant investment of new IT systems and the ways of working.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract
This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent
Key responsibilities
Leadership and Management
Work with Heads of School Administration to provide leadership and guidance for colleagues supporting research across the Faculty
Take decisions on complex issues that have a long term and far-reaching impact within the Faculty
Lead significant projects or work streams ensuring the effective use of resources, setting standards and monitoring procedures
Ensure the direction of the Faculty aligns with the ambitions of the Faculty strategy and Vision 2029
Strategic support
Support the Vice Dean (Research) in the articulation of the research strategy and managing its implementation alongside the IoPPN Research Development Manager (RDM)
Provide project management for strategic initiatives across the Faculty relating to research, liaising with the RDM
Take a lead role in the implementation of new IT systems and ways of working with a view to maximising efficiency for the academic community
Work with the Vice Dean (Research) to implement University policy relating to research across the Faculty
Attend and ensure the provision of support for the Faculty Research Executive Committee
Assist with the development and monitoring of Faculty KPIs relating to research and to support the Director of Operations in the research dimensions of business planning each year
Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements including open access, GDPR and UKVI
Work with the joint SLaM/IoPPN R&D Office Director of Research Quality and the Research Development Manager (IoPPN) to provide insight and advice on research collaborations across the faculty.
Support the Associate Dean for Doctoral Studies on research related queries as part of providing an outstanding postgraduate research student experience (alongside the Education Support Team).
Maximising research income
Work with the Vice Dean (Research), and Heads of Schools to maximise the Faculty’s grant portfolio
Work with RMID and continue to develop and optimise the process for managing research grants
Work with Schools to ensure they contribute to the Faculty’s target to increase research performance and funding from charitable, government and commercial sources, in conjunction with the IoPPN RDM
Improve practices around the use of management systems supporting research grant applications, and the collection, analysis and reporting of performance data, working closely with colleagues in the Schools
Monitor award income and provide data on income and overhead recovery to Institute Management Board and the Research Executive Committee
To collaborate with the Vice-Dean (Research), and act as delegate for the Director of Operations in the use of Worktribe for the approval of funded grant applications and pre-award compliance.
To manage and coordinate with colleagues on award management including project closures, and reporting, identifying and mitigating project risks
To ensure that appropriate support is in place for principal investigators to manage awards in line with funder terms and conditions
Relationships, networks and alignment
Build, develop and sustain relationships with academic and professional services staff across the Faculty, and more widely across the university, joining and/or developing networks and other effective mechanisms to disseminate and promote research programmes and to champion best practice, contribution to the effective alignment and integration of the ‘Research and Researchers’ function across King’s
Develop and sustain effective relationships together with the Vice Dean (Research)
Work with the Research Managers Network to support research staff across the Faculty, escalating issues to relevant colleagues and/or committees to ensure the issues raised by this body of staff are understood and responded to.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
Educated to degree level or postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject and leadership experience, or substantial experience and proven success in a strategically important broad function/specialist area; or extensive vocational experience, demonstrating professional development and achievement in a series of progressively more demanding, influential and broad work roles, backed by evidence of deep and broad knowledge of the research management
A commitment to ongoing development
Demonstrable project management and organisational skills, with proven ability to work to deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritise activities effectively, while ensuring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Sound working knowledge of Worktribe (or similar Enterprise HE Research Award management systems)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with evidence of building good working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, motivating, negotiating, influencing and networking nationally and internationally
Proficient IT skills (including databases, Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and strong analytical skills and capabilities
Experience of regulatory compliance within the higher education sector
Experience of developing innovation solutions and practical implementation for strategic change
Experience of financial management including monitoring and analysis
Ability to sustain constructive relationships with multiple stakeholders at senior level
Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment
Desirable criteria
Postgraduate qualification or relevant professional qualification
Good working knowledge and familiarisation with the university’s policies and procedures including financial regulations
Experience of being in a leadership position
