Full time, permanent position available for an experienced and dynamic Nurse Unit Manager, Perioperative Services within Macquarie University Hospital, as part of MQ Health.

THE ROLE
MQ Health is seeking an experienced and dynamic Nurse Unit Manager, (NUM) Perioperative Services to support the Cardiac, Vascular and Respiratory Theatres at Macquarie University Hospital on a permanent basis.
Reporting to the Nurse Manager, Perioperative Services, the Nursing Unit Manager (NUM), Perioperative Services is responsible for the provision of efficient and effective operating services that achieve optimal patient outcomes within the cardiac and vascular theatre. The NUM will ensure the delivery of high quality nursing and perioperative care in accordance with legislative requirements and professional guidelines. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the resources and staff of the specialties within their discipline mix.
At Macquarie University Hospital we offer extensive cardiac and vascular surgery including Coronary artery bypass grafts, mitral valve repairs, lobectomies and various robotic surgeries.
About You:
In this role, the successful candidate will provide leadership, mentorship and support in the achievement of excellence in nursing practice within the department. You will promote a culture that embraces best practice and identifies, evaluates and incorporates appropriate emerging trends in the practice of the clinical disciplines within their unit. The Nurse Unit Manager will work collaboratively with the Perioperative Services Team, relevant Executive members, Clinical Program Heads and Discipline Heads.

Key Accountabilities of the role include:
> Leadership and Management
Act as a role model within and external to the organisation by providing professional leadership and upholding the values of MQ Health and the Nursing profession.
Promote and maintain a high performance work culture and foster collaborative teamwork & promote a culture of shared governance.
Participate in relevant leadership committees and forums throughout the hospital representing the interests of the perioperative service and providing feedback to staff.
> Operational Performance
Coordinate the efficient use of operating sessions in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, Perioperative Services, Theatre Floor Nurse Unit Manager, Evening Floor Coordinator, After Hours Manager, Theatre Scheduler, Anaesthetists and Surgeons.
Review emergency bookings and liaise with relevant teams for possible reallocation of cases to vacated sessions ensuring all additions and cancellations are communicated
Communicate to the Nurse Manager, Perioperative Services instances of cancellations, Delays, inappropriate use of emergency time and any other issues that affect the efficiency of the Perioperative Service.
Manage staff leave, overtime and other allowances
Coordinate Clinical Audits
> Communication
Manage the clinical processes within the service to achieve and maintain optimal levels of efficiency in clinical practice & ensure a culture of patient advocacy in the provision of care.
Maintain open and effective communication with other Nurse Unit Managers, Evening Floor Coordinator, After Hours Manager, Theatre Scheduler, Anaesthetists, and Surgeons.
Ensure there is negotiation with the multidisciplinary team for timely patient care and intervention
Support and promote the establishment of effective communication mechanisms between patients and the multidisciplinary team
Provide support to distressed patients in a prompt and effective manner
Identify and escalate patient complaints appropriately to manage the risk
Work with the Nurse Manager, Perioperative Services to ensure staff are aware of appropriate communication mechanisms for escalating concerns.
Maintain progressive and effective documentation in accordance with industrial standards and best practice.
> Information Technology
Promote a culture of change within the perioperative service to advance the use of information technology in nursing practice.
Maintain accurate patient and nursing records
Provide mentorship to nursing staff to support their professional development with information technology programs available to the division
Use information technology effectively to monitor ongoing resource utilisation within the perioperative service
> Clinical Practice
Manage the clinical processes within the service to achieve and maintain optimal levels of efficiency & ensure a culture of patient advocacy.
Provide timely intervention and problem solving within theatres
Ensure that the provision of care meet patients’ needs and requirements
Ensure that nursing practice in the Theatres is compliant with relevant policies and procedures and best practice guidelines
Implement the recommendations secondary to investigations/RCA’s
Participate in and contribute to implement other service based projects
Remain informed of current relevant nursing research
Promote an environment of evidence based clinical nursing care
Ensure the development and implementation of appropriate education programs in conjunction with the education team of perioperative services.
> Quality Management
Promote quality activities and coordinate quality improvement projects within the department & Manage critical incidents
Participate in quality improvement and evidence based research projects
Manage critical incidents which occur across the Perioperative service
Promote quality activities and coordinate quality improvement projects
> Human Resource Management
Oversee the team to manage, assess and develop staff e.g. development, implementation and review of Induction and education programs, Performance Reviews to meet individual needs and achieve organisational goals,
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the industrial award as it applies to staff entitlements, working conditions and rosters.
Manage, assess and develop staff e.g. development, implementation and review of Induction and education programs and Performance Reviews.
Recruit and retain nursing staff as part of workforce planning
Support performance management systems and provide ongoing feedback to staff on performance outcomes
Contribute to the day to day management and monitoring of workforce allocation and roster development
Facilitate the attendance of staff in mandatory training and professional development activities
Support staff to understanding and comply with the requirement to report all clinical incidents through Riskman
Address appropriate performance, grievance and discipline issues in line with Policy and collaboration with HR and Nurse Manager, Perioperative Services
Provide counselling and support to staff within the service as required and direct them to relevant support services
