JOB POSTING

This position works a hybrid remote format, requiring a telecommuting agreement and adherence to the UCSC Telecommuting/Remote Work Guidelines. The employee shall be available in a full-time capacity during assigned telecommuting work hours (specific hours to be discussed with supervisor). While telecommuting/remote working, the employee is responsible for ensuring a worksite environment suitable for accomplishing their regular job duties during scheduled hours of work and, if applicable, arranging for dependent care just as they would if they were working at the regular UCSC worksite.

NOTIFICATIONS

UC Vaccination Policy: With limited exceptions, COVID-19 vaccinations are required for Covered Individuals under the Policy. Covered Individuals include all employees, students, or trainees who physically access a University facility or program in connection with their employment, appointment, or education/training.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Equity Assessment and Evaluation (EAE) unit in the Division of Student Affairs and Success engages in equity-oriented collaborative research with faculty, students and staff, to better understand, assess, and support student success at UCSC. We provide data, research, assessment and evaluation support to the UCSC campus. We believe that effective student success efforts and outcomes depend on fostering a culture of rigorous, research-based analysis connected to improving practice.

JOB SUMMARY

Uses research methodological skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of research practices and higher education organizational policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting appropriate research methods and techniques (quantitative and qualitative) for obtaining solutions.

Under the general direction of the Director of Equity Assessment and Evaluation in Student Affairs and Success, the analyst aggregates, analyzes, and interprets student and other data for regular internal and external reporting and ad hoc studies, and conducts research in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, student progress and success, educational effectiveness, and program evaluation. The incumbent supports the Division of Student Affairs and Success as well as staff and faculty throughout the campus.

JOB DUTIES

50% – Reporting and Analytics

Develop and revise queries and reports using campus business intelligence tools (InfoView, EAB, Handshake and potentially others) to meet information needs and to address ongoing and ad hoc reporting requirements, using agreed-upon standard definitions and methodologies.
Design interactive infographics and data visualization (Tableau) to enhance analysis, accessibility and presentation of institutional data.
Produce historical campus level and program specific reports on a quarterly or annual production schedule; maintain information on the division’s website; and provide data and information for campus stakeholders on an ad hoc basis.
Use third-party data analytics systems to provide data and information to campus stakeholders to promote student success.

30% – Data Analysis, Research, and Evaluation

Apply general knowledge in data collection and analysis techniques; statistics or social science research techniques such as basic regression, multivariate regressions (propensity score matching would be a plus), and additional methods, and statistical software (Stata, R, SPSS, Excel) and qualitative analysis software.
Work collaboratively and in consultation with divisional units, design and implement evaluations of policies, programs and initiatives using appropriate research methods and statistical techniques. Produce written and oral reports with conclusions, implications, and recommendations to a variety of stakeholders.

10% – Strategic Planning Support

Provide ad hoc reporting and analytic support to principal officers, academic divisions, departments, and other decision-making bodies.
Gather, analyze and present data and information in support of key strategic planning initiatives, including identifying sources, and appropriate comparative and benchmarking data.
Develop dashboards and use third-party tools that display key student success metrics for campus leadership.

5% – Data Management & Security

Manage EAE data storage, security, and policies. Help improve EAE’s data management and security processes.
Working closely with the Data Management units, participate in the development of institutional databases by identifying data needs, requirements, specifications and sources.
Assure the validity and quality of DSAS data submissions to external agencies and systems, including the UC Office of the President.

5% – Professional Development and Service

Pursue opportunities to enhance expertise in areas of data science, institutional research, higher education, and assessment to keep skills current and stay abreast of current educational trends.
Serve on campus-wide committees and workgroups as appropriate; interact with peers across the UC system and at the UC Office of the President.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Demonstrated experience producing data analytics and/or dashboards.
Demonstrated experience conducting applied social science or educational research, including quantitative and qualitative research methodology, program assessment and evaluation, and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis.
Proficiency accessing information stored in large data systems and in use of computer applications, including databases, business intelligence, statistical, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
Excellent analytical skills sufficient to analyze and interpret written material and quantitative and qualitative data, and to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise reports and memoranda.
Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to make public presentations to multiple audiences and explain complex issues to academic audiences and those with limited research methods.
Abilities to work independently with minimal guidance and as part of a team toward common goals, and to coordinate efforts and collaborate with a variety of individuals.
Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and manage multiple activities to meet unit, campus and university deadlines.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to complete a variety of assignments.
Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy, and to maintain accurate and detailed records.
Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to work effectively with senior administration, faculty, staff, students, and the general public in a diverse work environment.
Commitment to educational equity and social justice.
Familiarity with higher educational literature on student retention, progress, and learning outcomes assessment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced degree in Education Research, Social Sciences, Statistics, or related field employing quantitative data analysis.
Familiarity with issues in higher education and with UC policies, practices and procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Must be able to work a predetermined hybrid work format and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
