The Health Department’s Public Health Division is responsible for promoting and protecting health and preventing disease among all Multnomah County communities. Our approaches include policy initiatives, community partnerships, and other interventions that operate within a health equity framework.
The Immunization Health Educator will lead and support the culture of communicable disease prevention through community education and implement broad-based solutions related to immunization and communicable disease prevention. You will plan, develop, implement and participate in evaluation of immunization education programming in order to assure culturally inclusive, medically accurate, nonjudgmental community dialogue and learning about immunizations, their safety and efficacy.
You will work with other Public Health Division partners to identify credible voices, to convene community leadership, and to educate vaccine ambassadors and will also use communication skills to support internal and external programmatic communication needs in general and to share programmatic and epidemiology data. Additional duties include providing technical assistance to community partners and county staff; promoting sound, accurate, culturally appropriate materials and information aimed at communicable disease prevention; and assisting with quality improvement initiatives.
This is a field based position that will be supporting mobile clinics and pop-up clinics for community events and provides back up as needed to other parts of the immunization response; and will require occasional weekend and evening work, as well as working outdoors in a range of weather.
As the Health Educator you will:
Develop and implement broad-based health education solutions related to immunization and communicable disease prevention.
Coordinate meetings as needed to engage community stakeholders for input on the development of health education materials and resources. Incorporate community input from community members/groups most impacted by vaccine-preventable disease and develop health education materials, messages and training based on input.
Gather, assemble and present relevant public health data and research on epidemiology data related to immunizations and health disparities.
Plan and facilitate health education presentations and/or workshops to a wide variety of targeted audiences to create community dialogue and information sharing about vaccine barriers, safety, and efficacy.
Develop curriculum and resources, and facilitate training of vaccination ambassadors and internal/external community health workers in order to educate the community on immunizations and communicable disease prevention strategies.
Assist with convening community groups to collaboratively identify immunization-related data collection and identify resources for disseminating information.
Consult with community members to gather input to identify barriers to vaccine access and share feedback to increase access and navigability to health care systems.
Plan, develop, implement and participate in evaluation of immunization education programming in order to assure culturally inclusive, medically accurate, nonjudgmental community dialogue and learning about immunizations, their safety and efficacy.
Carry out the evaluation components of projects, which includes organizational, community assessments, focus groups, key stakeholder interviews, etc. in order to identify health education needs.
Assist in vaccination/testing clinics as needed. Assist team members with transporting or delivering vaccine and/or supplies to designated vaccine holding locations and/or community-based clinics.
Form relationships with key partners, serving as one of the liaisons between County, relevant stakeholders and community partners. Attend community and partner organization meetings relevant to programmatic work.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in health education or a related field
Three years of increasingly responsible experience involving the development, delivery, and administration of health education programs
This position will include occasional shift coverage outdoors on evenings or on weekends
This is a field based position that will be supporting mobile clinics and pop-up clinics for community events
The schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday, scheduled hours to be determined with supervisor and may include evenings and weekends depending on clinic needs
Preferred Qualifications/ Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/ transferable skills to qualify. Certification/passage of the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam administered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., is desirable
Experience leading a diverse team

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:
To protect the health of the community and employees, Multnomah County requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious exception by October 18, 2021 as a qualification of employment.
The rule applies to all employees, as allowable by law. Candidates who receive an offer of County employment must provide proof of vaccination upon hire or submit an exception request prior to their start date.
