SUMMARY:
This is a 1.0 FTE teacher on special assignment (TSA) position to support K-12 Health and PE teachers and activities in the district. The specialist reports directly the District Supervisor for Health and Physical Education.
Essential Job Duties:
The district Healthy Lifestyles Specialist has specialized knowledge of research, effective instructional strategies, and varied assessment practices in physical education and health. The specialist coordinates curriculum and resources for teachers and paraprofessionals in physical education and health in grades K-12. There is a specific focus on preparing and supporting elementary paraprofessionals in PE positions.
The specialist engages teachers in coherent and on-going professional learning that supports continuous growth of pedagogical content knowledge. This is achieved through District-wide professional learning offerings that may be designed, facilitated, or organized by the specialist. The specialist facilitates and participates in a variety of meetings and committees to support a coherent, connected curriculum and to support teachers in meeting high standards for student achievement.
The specialist will chair the District Human Sexuality Committee and run open meetings following the required Open Meeting procedures.
The specialist will write grants to augment services provided in their content areas and maintain records and files for the program.
The specialist will need to be able to transport materials and equipment as needed to various sites to support teachers and professional development.
Work Environment Requirements:
Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations.
Driving to work locations
Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, etc…
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Professional Utah Teaching License, an Associate Educator License, or a license from another state that is transferrable to Utah
Bachelor’s degree in either Health education or Physical Education
Five years successful teaching experience in Physical Education and/or Health
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to varied audiences
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with district personnel, school administrators, teachers and outside entities such as the local and state health departments, Utah State Board of Education specialists, specialist in other districts, and state and national organizations such as SHAPE, etc.
Evidence of professional development in and implementation of state curriculum for physical education and health core curriculum and related legislation and requirements
Demonstrated experience in working with diverse student population. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and learning and the ability to model effective strategies to engage students in physical activity
Evidence of collaborative/cooperative relationships to support staff in adult learning
Ability to teach and model lessons on literacy and numeracy in a physical education classroom
Experience developing and presenting professional development to adults
Experience teaching adaptive PE
Bilingual (Spanish preferred)
