Job Summary: Responsible for performing guest service functions including incident response, administering first aid and evacuating injured guests, assessing and maintaining trails, promoting a safe environment for guests and employees, evacuating lifts and performing trail work and maintenance. The majority of the duties are performed outdoors in variable conditions.
Most of the work is conducted outdoors in the on-mountain arena. Assist in production of bike races, events, and other mountain activities. Additional work will be conducted in the events and recreation department office located on the 1st floor of the Mountain Operations building or in Patrol HQ at the Summit.
Job Relationships: Reports to: Bike Patrol Supervisor, Bike Park Manager and Bike Park Assistant Manager Employees Supervised: None
Job Requirements: High school diploma or GED equivalent, college education or trade education preferred. CPR/AED certification at the Basic Life Support level Current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) or comparable/higher medical certification. Incident Command System 100. Knowledge of Whitefish Mountain Resort operations and/or resort operations is preferred Must be able to safely ride all trails at WMR; Advanced biking skills preferred Previous patrol experience or comparable experience preferred.
Job Specifications: Must be able to remain calm and handle a variety of emergency situations (medical incidents, transports, event operation and support, wildfire and wildlife incidents, and lift incidents and evacuations). Must be able to always remain a professional level of communication with guests and employees. Effectively and accurately complete incident forms and other documentation as needed. Ability to accurately collect information for incident investigations and identify investigation needs. Able to operate mountain vehicles. Ability to coordinate resources for patient and guest transport. Ability to assist with dispatch operations at any time. Knowledge of basic lift operation, evacuation and ability to look for potential problems. Knowledge of all of WMR sweeps, morning duties, trail closures and sweeps. Knowledge of ALERT protocols and ability to choose and set up landing zones. Per WSI Vehicle Insurance standards: must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to be added to WSI’s vehicle insurance policy. Subject to WSI’s Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse Policy based on the nature of the position and related duties.
Specific Duties:
Patrol Operations Participate in ongoing medical, technical, and evacuation related training. Assessment and closure of trails and trail features based on conditions or needs. Identify and mark hazards or changing conditions. Communicate with other mountain operations departments as needed. Perform morning duties which may include inspecting and maintaining signage. Educate guests who are acting in an irresponsible or unsafe manner, including fire prevention education. Know all mountain runs as well as local/patrol names for specific areas Keep all patrol areas and stations in a clean, orderly condition. Identify medical equipment needs and communicate to bike park management.
Incidents Patrol is responsible for responding to all incidents/medical emergencies on the mountain operation and mountain owned lodges and restaurants. Initiate 911/ALERT notification when appropriate based on specific circumstances, patient condition, and applicable protocols. Responsible for learning incident reports procedures and follow ups. Be proficient and able to train staff with all medical equipment used by WMR Ski Patrol Maintain a thorough knowledge of the WMR Wildfire Plan. Maintain a professional demeanor.
Rescue and Evacuation Possess thorough knowledge of all patient extrication and egress points on mountain. Know and practice with all rescue equipment (litters, vehicles usage, extrication devices, etc). Ability to lead lift evac skills trainings and assist with more advanced technical trainings. Know and practice with lift evacuation procedures and equipment (evacuation ropes, hardware, self-evacuation).
Trail Maintenance Ability to lead patrollers and trail crew staff on designated projects. Communicate with Bike Park Management and Trail Crew Supervisor to identify areas of need or improvement. Trail Tool proficiency with a knowledge of proper use and understanding of mountain bike trail building techniques. Effectively identify safety concerns, and ability to work around obstacles until deemed safe or repaired. Be familiar with all mountain trails, winter trail names, access points, and areas. Check and replace trail signs and identify trail marking needs.
Public Relations Expected to be neat, clean, and wear approved/provided uniforms. Perform duties related to on mountain events and races. Expected to be courteous and helpful to the skiing public, present a professional attitude and manner at all times. Provide information to guests at patrol stations and headquarters as well as on the mountain.
Races and Events Perform event set up and support as needed for bike races, on mountain events, and weddings. Ability to communicate event and patrol needs to Bike Park Management.
Safety & Wellness:
All team members are expected to continuously be alert and identify, mitigate or report occupational or public hazards to the appropriate WMR supervisor, manager or employee. This will involve, but not be limited to, periodic inspections of work and public areas. Follow up notification will be done to correct the condition or practice at the earliest possible opportunity.
Work Environment: Frequently ski with/lift/carry up to 50 pounds of weight, often in awkward positions and variable mountain conditions. Occasionally lift up to 100 pounds – may require lifting while twisting at torso and bending at knees for patient transfers into and out of vehicles/transport devices. Work is moderate to strenuous and frequent overall in all types of weather and conditions. Continuously throughout the shift required to twist, stoop/bend, squat, kneel, grasp with both hands, and ride bicycles. Occasionally climb lift towers, stairs, and work above the ground (heights) Ability to work under varying weather conditions, often extreme in nature. Job requires working weekends, holidays and overtime during peak demand times. Required to wear a helmet during all on-bike activities, operating chainsaws, or any other time head injury or overhead hazard is present).
