Job Description : Duties

Conducts research developed between the Program Manager, other stations and Program scientists, the Rocky Mountain Research Station?s programs, and the scientist.
Conducts research initiating new studies and collaborating with scientists for the analysis of existing quantitative data sets in the biological sciences field.
Research focus in developing new knowledge about relationships between biological species, their diseases, and their habitats, and the responses of biological population to natural and human caused disturbances.
Scientist develops and maintain collaborative relationships with scientists and partners in other agencies and institutions and universities.
The scientist will disseminate scientific results through published literature, symposia, presentations, and workshops.
Leads the Resource Planning Act (RPA) assessment and report on wildlife and biodiversity every 10 years, which is a status and trend analysis of the nation?s wildlife

Qualifications

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual’s demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.

Degree: successful completion of four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements applicants must have also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-12 Grade Level: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience for this position includes 52 weeks of ALL of the following:
(1) Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: quantitative biology and species trend assessment; developing, improving, and evaluating procedures for understanding and predicting wildlife and biodiversity response to changes in land cover, land use, critical habitats, land management activities, and climate at landscape and macroecologic scales over time; identifying and investigating ecological factors affecting changes in animal distribution and abundance and interpreting those patterns in terms of sustainable resource management; developing single-species and multi-species models that explore the theoretical and empirical basis for changes in species populations and biological diversity.
(2) Forming, leading, and participating in research teams, regional, and/or national importance.
(3) Dissemination research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing result in peer-reviewed journals

Graduate Level Education: A conferred Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in areas related to the work of the position which is application of spatial, ecological, and biological science research and analysis to natural resources and wildlife management and/or includes coursework in areas such as geospatial analysis, genetics, genomics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science, quantitative ecology, and biometrics. Such degrees would be in wildlife biology, ecology, big data management, forestry, statistics, mathematics, or conservation biology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position.
