Job Overview:
This position is the Missoula Unit Manager. We are looking for a proven leader who has excellent communication skills; can establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners; is motivated to achieve long and short term goals; can remain focused when faced with a challenge; has a vision for their team; and has the ability to empower their team to succeed ensuring each member feels valued.
Responsibilities include planning and developing Missoula Unit goals, policies, and methods to conduct all DNRC field programs within the geographic area; providing professional resource management and administrative oversight of Unit activities and projects including timber sales, special uses, forest improvement and hazard reduction; fire prevention and response; land management assistance on non-state ownerships; and administering the Unit’s budget, policies, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program planning and development:
Plan and develop Missoula Unit goals, policies and methods to conduct all DNRC field programs within the geographic area to achieve Department and Area objectives and ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Programs developed include:
Forest Improvement
Forest product sales
Technical forestry assistance
Wildland fire prevention and response
Administration of state land leases and licenses
Gravel pit administration and reclamation
Right-of-way administration
Hazard reduction
Burning permit administration
Enforcement, development and management of the Unit’s special uses program

Project implementation:
Provides professional resource management and administrative oversight of Unit activities and projects to ensure all timber sales, special uses, forest improvement, hazard reduction, fire prevention and response and related activities are conducted in a cost-effective and timely manner, conform with state and federal land use and environmental regulations, and that best management concepts and practices are followed Direct and coordinate Unit activities through project development and control of project activities.
Unit administration:
Administer the Missoula Unit’s budget, policies, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe program operations, compliance with statutory responsibilities and related laws, and compliance with state, and federal regulations.
Staff management:
Manage 11.70 FTE on the Missoula Unit. This involves reviewing work plans and procedures, handling disciplinary actions; resolving conflicts; hiring; training; and recommendations for terminating staff.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related resource management field and two years progressively responsible experience including forest and fire management, program administration and one year of supervisory experience.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
This position must be able to complete field work including the ability to work independently in rough terrain in all weather conditions. This position must be able to work administratively within a wildfire environment.
SPECIAL INFORMATION: Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver’s license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., or a U.S. passport, or a “green card”.

Training Assignment: This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
