Job Description : 1st Pet Veterinary Centers is seeking an experienced Master’s prepared Social Worker for our Mesa location. We are an employee-owned (ESOP), Emergency, Specialty, and Primary Care practice in the Phoenix metro area. About This Role:
While under the direct supervision of the Social Work Program Manager, the Veterinary Social Worker must be able to effectively and accurately perform the following duties that include but are not limited to:
Client Care

Provide short-term crisis support to clients (pet owners).
Facilitate decision making with clients:

Assess comprehension of diagnosis and prognosis of the patient (pet)
Provide assistance with quality of life understanding and end-of-life decisions
Communicate information re: anticipatory grief, palliative care, euthanasia, and body care options

Accompany clients to visit patients in ICU; assist in getting updates from the medical team.
Offer support/resources during or after euthanasia; attend as needed by a client.
Provide grief and pet loss education and counseling to clients.
Maintain and give community resources and/or make referrals as requested.
Assess and intervene with clients who: express suicidal thoughts, lack lucidity, appear impaired, have become escalated, and also with couples in disagreement re: a treatment plan.
Facilitate a pet loss support group.
Maintain consistent documentation of client intervention in the electronic medical record; uphold confidentiality.

Staff Care

Intervene and offer short-term support with staff: in crisis, needing to process/debrief client encounters, in conflict with co-workers, experiencing compassion fatigue, or other situations which may hinder the ability to work effectively. Provide referral for outside counseling or EAP as needed.
Provide consultation to doctors and staff with regard to the assessment of clients for facilitation of treatment and best method of communication with clients. Free doctors’ time when clients are demanding excessive consultation due to emotional needs.
Offer psychoeducational programs for staff about:

Communication skills
De-escalation skills
Wellness and self-care
Stress management and compassion fatigue
Mental health and suicide prevention

Plan and participate in wellness initiatives.
Maintain consistent documentation of staff intervention; uphold confidentiality.

About You:
You are a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the state of Arizona in good standing with the Board. You have a minimum of 3 years of experience post-graduate school in a hospital, hospice, or mental health setting. Additional experience with grief and/or trauma preferred. You must be willing and able to supervise MSW students for their internship placement. Additional skills needed to be a successful 1st Pet team member include:

Leadership ability, professionalism, organization, reliability, and independence.
Confident, authentic, flexible, and grounded personality with respect for introversion.
Trustworthy and emotional maturity with a good sense of humor.
Ability to prioritize, multi-task, delegate when needed, and endure a fast pace.
Good understanding of the human-animal bond.
Outstanding self-care skills and desire to promote/model these with staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
