Position Purpose
The Youth Specialist is responsible for working with refugee and immigrant youth one on one as a mentor while also facilitating afterschool programming during after school hours. As a mentor you will follow the outlined plan for each individual youth in identifying needs and creating a service plan to address those needs with a focus on academic needs and family needs. Essentially you will mentor identified in-need refugee/immigrant youth while also collaborating with the Youth and Family Services team to track progress of all youth within AAU Program. When facilitating the after school program, you and another afterschool staff will carry out after school programming that takes place at one of the afterschool program sites. These programs include carrying out academic assistance and other appropriate social/emotional programming. The staff will work closely with the supervisory staff to facilitate and run all parts of the program. Preference given to bilingual candidates that speak Spanish, Somali, Swahili, Arabic or another refugee specific language.
Schedule
Position will start ASAP. 20 hours a week will be spent carrying out after school programming that will run from approximately 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm M-F during the regular school year. 20 hours of Mentoring programming hours will be utilized in a variable schedule based upon the needs of the mentee. Position is permanent year around with slight adjustments to scheduling during summer months.
Responsibilities

Coordinate and execute all activities in the After school programming which includes but is not limited to carrying out homework help, programming (planned lessons), and any other field trips or partnership activities; the focus of this year is teaching comprehensive sexual health
Collaborate with other afterschool staff in completing all grant objectives
Planning alternate activities for homework time (for kids who do not have homework or have finished homework)
Keeping grant requirements and objectives up to date and organized – maintaining a consistent average daily attendance, recruiting new students, reporting, etc.
Mentoring a case load of 15 youth which includes assessing needs, establishing goals, and preventing youth from initial/further interfacing with the Juvenile Justice System.
Collaborate in completing grant reporting
Completing other assigned tasks as needed

Other Considerations:
-experience in working with diverse youth/youth involved in the court system
-bilingual individuals who speak refugee specific languages given preference
– teaching experience and/or degree/coursework in education/social work/criminal justice
– experience with refugees and diverse populations
– must have own transportation/valid driver’s license for position – part of the position responsibilities is to assist in providing transportation (reimbursed per mile at federal rate); must have at least 2 years of driving experience
– must pass background check
Compensation

$17-20/hr DOE

Typical Day as a Youth Specialist
The Youth Specialist will work to identify needs and services for youth they are mentoring on their case load. Before/after the afterschool program takes place the Youth Specialist will visit the mentee’s homes, schools, community to meet and work with their mentee. When it comes time to prepare for the other Afterschool Program staff/Youth Specialist will meet at afterschool program site every day before program begins. Once at the program the staff will work together to prepare and plan the offerings for after school program that day. This might include serving a Food Bank sponsored pre-prepared Kid’s Café meal, provide academic assistance, provide program snack and then teach the chosen lesson/facilitate the activity. At the end of the program the staff will coordinate driving students home in the agency van and their own vehicle if necessary. Staff will be reimbursed a federal per mileage rate when they utilize their own vehicle for the program.
Outside of the day to day after school program all program staff will work with the program supervisor to ensure structure, rules, and all other program details are planned and executed day to day. Additionally, staff will coordinate planning the week to week program schedule including mentoring services, program activity and lesson planning. The program staff will work closely with the Out-of-school-time Program Supervisor to communicate with school contacts regarding mentoring and afterschool programming (teachers and administrators).
If students are on a school holiday there will be no after school program. Staff will be expected to work with their mentees during school holidays.

Depending on circumstances of the pandemic some parts of the position/program may be performed remotely; if necessary, the position will be provided the appropriate PPE and clean materials according to CDC guidelines. As of this posting all aspects of the program are planned for in person settings.
