SummaryA Crisis Intervention Specialist is a trained professional who provides emotional support, safety planning, information, and referral services to clients who call the RCC’s 24/7 Crisis Hotline or contact our agency through online chat. Crisis hotline and chat clients include survivors of sexual violence, their friends and family members, and victim-serving professionals. During each call or chat, the Crisis Intervention Specialist will develop trust and rapport with the client, assess the client’s immediate needs, offer an appropriate short-term intervention, and provide referrals to programs and resources that will promote long-term healing. Crisis Intervention Specialists may also offer general information on topics related to sexual violence.
In addition to answering calls from the community, Crisis Intervention Specialists will interact with individuals who reside in jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers through ourPREA Support Hotline and Correspondence program. All crisis hotline staff members will gain a basic understanding of the corrections system, become familiar with the federal law that addresses sexual violence behind bars, and tailor their responses to meet the unique needs of incarcerated survivors.
Full-Time Crisis Intervention Specialists will also schedule counseling clients for appointments and complete administrative tasks during their hotline shifts. When they are not responding to calls or online chats, staff members are expected to assist with data entry and reporting, contact clients to request feedback on our advocacy services, and engage in projects to improve hotline operations. These job duties may vary depending on program needs and each person’s skills and interests.
To ensure that crisis hotline services are always available to our clients, staff members in this department must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays, in addition to covering shifts during office hours.

General Responsibilities
Over the phone, via online chat, and (less frequently) in our office, provide emotional support to clients presenting a crisis related to sexual violence.
To promote our clients’ safety, use the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale to screen for risk of self-harm; and develop a safety plan or connect the client with emergency mental health treatment resources, depending on the level of risk.
Use active listening skills, validate clients’ feelings, and help to clarify their concerns.
Encourage clients to identify healthy coping skills and mobilize their support systems to resolve the immediate crisis and reduce the impact of trauma.
Describe available options and empower clients to make well-informed decisions.
Based on the client’s stated or implied needs, offer referrals to services that are available at the Rape Crisis Center and in the community.
Provide general information on topics such as the dynamics of sexual violence, medical treatment options, and criminal justice system responses.
Establish appropriate boundaries with clients.
To protect our clients’ privacy, adhere to the RCC’s confidentiality polices and follow
HIPAA regulations.
Report any known or suspected abuse of minors, people age 65 or older, and people with disabilities to the authorities in accordance with state mandatory reporting laws.
Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all services provided in our crisis hotline call log and client service database, and complete client intake paperwork when appropriate.
Dispatch advocates to hospitals, police stations, and other community sites for client accompaniment services.
Arrange transportation for clients, using the RCC’s taxi and rideshare accounts.
Participate in monthly staff meetings and team meetings.
During office hours, answer calls to our main office number and schedule counseling appointments for clients.
Collaborate with peers and staff members from other departments to coordinate client care.
Conduct Client Satisfaction Surveys to request feedback on the effectiveness of RCC programs.
Respond to letters from incarcerated survivors.
Help to update and expand our directory of community resources by researching programs and services that may be helpful to our clients.
Assist in training and coaching our crisis hotline volunteers.
Participate in program outreach events and activities as assigned.
Assist with the development and delivery of training on topics that are relevant to the crisis hotline program.
Other duties as assigned.
General Qualifications
All RCC staff members must pass a background check and drug screening.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with supervisor, co- workers, and other members of our community’s sexual assault response team.
Sensitivity to individual values and needs.
Ability to work effectively with clients who display challenging behaviors.
Demonstrate competence in working with people of all races, national origins, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities.
Experience handling stressful situations in a professional manner and practicing self-care to manage the effects of vicarious trauma.
Strong computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, proficiency with email, and familiarity with database systems.
Knowledge of community resources; understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking; and ability to apply the principles of trauma- informed and client-centered services are preferred.
Previous experience working with vulnerable populations and individuals who have experienced trauma is preferred.
Commitment to supporting and empowering survivors of sexual violence and working to build a safe and healthy community.
Professional and Education Qualifications
BA/BS in human services field from an accredited college or university preferred.
Associate of Arts degree in Social Work, Health and Human Services, Psychology,Sociology, Criminal Justice, or related field will be considered. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
Required to complete the 40-Hour Office of Attorney General Sexual Assault Training
Program offered by the Rape Crisis Center within six months of employee’s start date.
Must fulfill monthly continuing education requirements, which may include attending workshops or seminars offered by the RCC or other local agencies, webinars, or online training options.
