Position : Victim Services Assistant
Job Description : Under general supervision provides reception and clerical support duties for the Victim Services Unit.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Ability to answer a multi-line phone and direct call to appropriate counselors; ability to enter data into the Victim Services database and ensure that all mailings to victims and returned mail are appropriately processed and documented. 2. Ability to answer general questions from victims when appropriate, including providing case information, VINE notification, and answering questions about the status of Crime Victims’ Compensation applications by communicating with the Office of the Attorney General/using the OAG on-line database. 3. Ability to maintain records of and fax police reports and applications to the Office of the Attorney General for Crime Victim’s Compensation and to the District Attorney’s Office for applications for protective orders on behalf of victims.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: 4. Ability to maintain the unit’s office supplies and paperwork 5. Ability to assist in processing new volunteers and interns by obtaining ID cards, parking tags, fingerprinting, and making training material available. 6. Ability to perform unit’s timekeeping duties. 7. Ability to transport victims to shelters.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Knowledge of proper English, spelling and punctuation. Knowledge of modern office methods, procedures and practice. Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system. Knowledge of issues related to family violence and crime victimization. Ability to effectively use judgment in responding to and interacting with the public in emotionally challenging situations on a recurring basis. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to telephone, PC, copier and fax machine. Ability to receive detailed information though oral communication.
Qualifying Education and Experience: A High School Diploma plus 2-3 years in victim services, crisis intervention, and/or social services experience. Bilingual Spanish/English Preferred. Background check includes: criminal.
