The Oregon Department of Forestry hires seasonal Forest Lookout positions each year. These positions generally work from June through September; however, the duration of the season and job conditions vary by location. Not all locations have vacancies each year. Interviews are projected to be completed by the end of May; however, application reviews may begin at any time. For best consideration, apply as soon as possible.
Sisters Unit: There is only one lookout at the present time being staffed. Henkle Butte is only about 6 miles from Sisters. You will have to provide your own transportation to this lookout, with the mileage being paid for one trip up and back each week. You may stay at the lookout during your 5 work days, but must stay elsewhere on days off. There is a small refrigerator and heater provided at this lookout. The normal work shift is 0930 -1800, 5 days a week and will work at least one day of the weekend. The Henkle’s cabin is about 25 ft above the ground. The person who staffs this lookout will work by themselves with very little personal contact.

New to Sisters?
While stationed in the Forest Lookout, you will be using binoculars and visual observation to constantly observe the surrounding area for signs of wildfire, suspicious fire related activity or suspected violations of fire prevention restrictions. When spotting a wildfire, you will determine azimuth and distance with an Osborne fire finder and maps to plot location to the nearest ¼ section and then report locations and characteristics to dispatch. Portable and mobile radios will be utilized to relay and monitor two way radio communications while recording information in a radio log. You will be monitoring lightning storms, reporting the direction and distance of thunder cells and recording the downstrikes for follow-up detection and possible action. You will be collecting and reporting daily weather observations of temperature, relative humidity, storm activity, state of the weather, and precipitation to the dispatch office. You will also coordinate fire detection with other lookouts, aircraft, and other personnel and act as communication relay where radio transmissions are difficult between field personnel and dispatch, providing updates on smoke characteristics to fire managers. You will complete a building safety checklist, reporting all safety hazards, damage, and unsafe conditions, and submit them to the supervisor.

The Department’s highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters. It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Must be 18 years of age at time of hire.
Skilled in performing wildland firefighting tasks.
Experience spotting forest fires for a natural resources company or agency.
Ability to provide information to members of the public, supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, radio, in written form or in person.
Experience analyzing information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
Ability to observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources.
Experience monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
Experience with reading and interpreting maps.
Ability to maintain adequate level of fitness to perform assigned duties.
Able to work with little supervision and personal contact.
Ability to work in high and semi-confined spaces.
Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.
Proven experience as an excellent communicator who is honest, fair and inclusive among employees, partners and stakeholders.
