Position Summary: Responsible for professional library duties that support Youth Services and their service to children, tweens, teens, and their caregivers under the direct supervision of the Head of Youth Services. Duties to include providing direct patron service, performing public service desk duties, conducting youth programming, and supporting adult programming as necessary, participating in community outreach programs, maintaining a good working relationship with local schools/teachers and other area youth-serving organizations, providing reference and reader’s advisory services, and assisting in the development and maintenance of the youth collections at the Oshtemo Branch.
Duties and Responsibilities: The following reflects management’s definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time due to reasonable accommodation or other reasons.
Provides direct patron service; assists in the location of materials; answers reference and readers’ advisory questions; instructs patrons in use of all library resources.
Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of innovative and engaging programming for youth and their families; assists in adult programming as needed.
Participates in collection development and management of Children’s Room and Teen youth collections; reviews new materials and follows established guidelines for weeding collections.
Represents KPL at community and outreach activities and events for youth; collaborates with schools and youth-serving organizations to determine common areas of interest.
Regularly contributes to KPL’s online presence.
Coordinates and creates topical bibliographies for children; works with Marketing and Communications staff to publish when appropriate.
Provides general supervision of branch hourly support staff in the absence of their supervisor
Participates in departmental meetings, library-wide committees, and library-related events.
Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library school with coursework pertaining to youth library services.
Basic knowledge of library operations.

Physical demands and work environment
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently within the office and patron areas of the library and in the communities served. In the work environments described below, the position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, lifting/moving objects up to 25 pounds, and use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The position occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, and speaking for extended periods of time.

Work environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, library spaces, and in the communities served. Some local travel outside the library is required. While performing the duties of this job outside of the library environment, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Schedule
40 hours weekly to include Saturday and evening rotations. Responsible for 6 Sundays shifts per year.

Salary
$53,057 annually; Step 1 (or closest step to current salary for transferring employee); health insurance; fully paid dental, vision, and life insurance; defined benefit pension. This position is classified as a KPLA Librarian.
