The City of Stockton is seeking to fill one (1) Library Assistant I vacancy in the Community Services Department. The incumbent will work Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00, with occasional evenings and weekends.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a “for-cause” employment status, and are represented by Stockton City Employees’ Association. (Classified/Represented)
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current regular full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list, or a combination of both.
These lists may be used to fill future vacancies.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
Under general supervision, performs paraprofessional work in support of library operations; may direct the work of Library Aides, Circulation Assistants, and other assigned library support staff on a limited basis; performs related work as assigned.
This position is eligible to receive Veteran’s Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran’s Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you may qualify for Veteran’s Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources office (see supplemental questionnaire for details in submitting DD-214 copy) by 12:00 p.m., Monday, April 4, 2022.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Library Assistant I is the entry-level class in this library paraprofessional series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn library system and City policies and procedures. As increased knowledge and skill are achieved, assignments are carried out with greater independence within established guidelines. This class is alternately staffed with Library Assistant II, and incumbents may advance to the higher level after successfully completing a one-year probationary period, gaining one additional year of experience and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications of the higher level class.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
Assists and advises patrons in the use of library reference sources and other library tools and equipment.
Provides reference and reader’s advisory assistance to the public, using reference materials, local on-line databases, and other appropriate tools.
Verifies bibliographic information for books, periodicals, pamphlets, documents, films, videos, and other library materials, using indexes, catalog guides, local or national computerized databases, and other bibliographic sources.
Evaluates patron requests for materials to determine the best strategy for filling requests at the least cost; borrows materials from other libraries for local patrons as appropriate.
Performs bibliographic verification for materials in preparation for cataloging; catalogs materials according to established procedures.
Reviews materials and recommends additions and deletions to collection.
Orders and receives new library materials; contacts vendors regarding materials ordered or faulty billings; prepares forms for interlibrary loan requests.
Plans and conducts library programs for children and other specific age groups.
Assists in training clerical and Library Aide staff in the duties, rules, and procedures of the assigned section or branch; may direct the work of Library Aides, Circulation Assistants, and other support staff.
May maintain special files or indexes, such as telephone books, pamphlets, or documents for assigned section.
Prepares informational materials, including book displays, exhibits, bulletin boards, book reviews, and publicity releases.
Assists library professional staff on special projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Completion of two years (60 semester units/90 quarter units) in an accredited college or university; library experience is desirable. Other Requirements: Must be willing to work evenings and weekends. NOTE: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to the job duties as defined under Class Characteristics. Knowledge of:
Standard terminology and practices related to paraprofessional library support work;
Computer user applications and software programs used in library support work;
Basic supervisory principles and practices; and
Books, authors, and reference sources in a variety of areas.
Skill in:
Using sound independent judgment within established guidelines;
Performing paraprofessional library work involving the use of computers and software programs;
Performing paraprofessional reference work and cataloging work;
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work;
Assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of others; and
Training staff in work procedures.
THE EXAMINATION:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education,
that
best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates’ names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
