Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) maintains over 660 miles of roads, 150 miles of streams, channels and other drainage and over 200 County buildings throughout Contra Costa County. CCCPWD provides services such as Parks and Recreation, Sand Bag Distribution and Flood Control throughout unincorporated areas of Contra Costa County.

The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill Maintenance Worker I vacancies. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

The Maintenance Worker I classification customarily performs a variety of manual tasks as a member of a maintenance or clean-up crew; and they perform other work as required. They are assigned to perform a variety of manual labor tasks in all weather conditions in connection with construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, buildings, flood control channels and other structures. Maintenance Worker I’s perform traffic control, move and transport materials and debris, dig holes, and level and sweep dirt. They also load and unload trucks, trim trees, cut brush, move and install timbers and boards. Maintenance Worker I’s are required to drive light trucks and operate a variety of hand powered and pneumatic tools. They are required to follow safe working practices and procedures and wear proper protective equipment as required.

What you will typically be responsible for:

Performing routine heavy manual labor, as a member of a maintenance or clean-up crew
Using various and electric or pneumatic powered tools in the performance of assigned work; such as, patching pavement, cutting and undergrowth from drainage channels along roadways
Loading and removing debris from homeless encampments, rights of way, and flood control facilitates
Assisting in keeping tools and equipment in working condition
Directing traffic by using proper M.U.T.C.D guidelines when construction work obstructs normal traffic routes

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Desirable Qualifications:

Experience working with a computer and using basic office software
Experience operating or working around heavy equipment
Experience working with and applying road construction materials
Possession of a Class A drivers license with tank and combination endorsements
Experience using and/or applying pesticides and herbicides
Experience working in Emergency response

Selection Process

Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
Online Multiple Choice Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online multiple choice assessment. The multiple choice exam will measure candidates’ competencies as they relate to the job. These may include, but are not limited to: safety focus, professional integrity and ethics, teamwork, attention to detail, and reading comprehension (Weighted 100%).

The Multiple Choice Assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place online the third week of April.

Candidates are not permitted to retake the same assessment within a 6 month period.

If you apply for another recruitment that uses this exam and the test is scheduled within 6 months of the date you took the test this time, you will not have the option to re-take the exam. If more than one year has passed, but less than three years have passed, you may choose to either re-use your score or retake the exam. If you elect to re-take the exam, your most recent score will be used, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the previous score.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
