Job Description : (contract position)
LOCATION: Forestry Department
Ronan, MT
SALARY: $28.21 to $36.64 per hour including benefits
CLOSING DATE: Thursday, March 24, 2022 @ 5:30 p.m.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT
Drug Testing Policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes
must pass a prehire drug test.
DUTIES:
Develop procedures for conduct and coordinate seed procurement, seed pretreatments,
seed viability and germination testing.
Conduct propagation trials, implement sowing techniques and implement/maintain plant
growth records.
Establish seed acquisition programs including: site collections, seed collectors’ contracts
and methods.
Have knowledge of native plants and the ability to use dichotomous keys to accurately
identify Montana plant species.
Coordinate and supervise the activities of collection, handling, storage, inventory of
seeds, cutting and other propagules.
Oversee the operation of coolers and cold storage rooms used in plant and seed
storage, assuring safe and proper storage of all propagules, including seed, cuttings,
rhizomes, bulbs, corms, tubers, etc.
Oversees sowing, shipping ground maintenance.
Ensures all propagation facilities are operated in a safe, efficient, clean, and safe
manner.
Document seed treatments and techniques.
Maintain inventory and operations for all aspects of the greenhouse operations.
Develop and design seed laboratory and write an operations manual for its use.
Modify and improve the operations manual for all aspects of the greenhouse operations.
Market seedlings and secure contracts for growing seedlings, shrubs and forbs.
Assist in the development of the departmental budget as required.
Attend relevant meeting and symposia, make presentations to peers in the industry and
conduct educational tours for schools and other programs.
Perform other duties as required.
MINIMUM RECRUITING QUALIFICATIONS AS REFLECTED ON TRIBAL
EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, plant science, or forestry from
an accredited college or university.
Minimum of 510 years of handson experience in public greenhouse or equivalent.
Minimum 23 years supervisory experience with landscape or garden staff preferred.
Ability to design, mix and administer organic and inorganic fertilizers and determine
fertilization needs.
Ability to work with diverse array of plant species, including trees, shrubs, forbs and
gaminoids.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AS DETERMINED THROUGH INTERVIEW AND
PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT REFERENCES:
Must be able to demonstrate excellent accountability as this position has authority to
initiate actions and make decisions within established precedents and practices with
regular managerial direction and review.
Must be able to demonstrate excellent judgement as the incumbent’s decisions directly
impact operating costs and indirectly influence client retention and future contract
awards.
Must be familiar with all operational concepts, practices, and procedures with the ability
to identify and sell landscape enhancements.
Must possess and demonstrate excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with
the ability to negotiate.
Must possess and demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills, with
competency in business writing.
Must be able to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
Must always represent the Tribes in a positive and professional manner.
Highly organized with great follow up abilities.
Excellent computer skills.
