Position : Managing Director at Oregon Shakespeare Festival

Job Description : `Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) seeks an innovative, systems driven and forward-thinking Managing Director to help cultivate an inclusive and values-driven culture by introducing people-centric systems and practices.
Who is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival?
OSF seeks to be an innovator, creating new paradigms across the theatrical omniverse. Over the last twenty years OSF has become a leader in the American Theatre as a repertory producer and is recognized nationally for our new work development, digital content creation (see our digital platform, O!) and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access work (IDEA). The pandemic tried to take us down, but OSF catapulted to the forefront of a national advocacy effort and was at the center of a national theatre uprising advocating for federal support for the Arts (enter the Shuttered Venue Operator Grant program). We are a behemoth of the American Theatre that exists in a small town in Southern Oregon. We are challenged by difficulty recruiting top talent, a lack of local housing, contracting for digital and live work, a lack of HR processes, complex community relations, and evolving our organizational culture. We create world class work and struggle with small town challenges.
A Commitment:
At OSF, we work to expand the transformational power of art and performance. Our invitation to the world is to join us as we cultivate a just and radically inclusive future. We center artists, are refocusing our culture around iterative progress, collaboration and service, and we seek to create a culture of belonging and inclusion. OSF is striving to be a global entity and ever-evolving container for the future that responds to the changing tides of our world. We are committed to coliberation through radically inclusive, accessible and collaborative practices. We nurture artists and multimodal, multidisciplinary practices and create access to the transformational power of art and performance. At OSF we envision our ecology as human-centric, financially and environmentally sustainable and interconnected.
Who is in Leadership?
Nataki Garrett (Artistic Director) is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s sixth artistic director. Since her appointment in April of 2019, she has guided the organization through numerous transitions and crises, all while building toward a more sustainable producing and fundraising model. The COVID-19 pandemic forced OSF to close five productions only six days after opening, in what was supposed to be Garrett’s first full season as artistic director. Shortly thereafter, Garrett oversaw the process to shrink expenditures at OSF while maintaining a humane connection to the OSF’s company as furloughs and layoffs ensued. During this time, Garrett, together with a cohort of Oregon arts leaders, secured $9 million for the state’s performing arts organizations from the federal relief fund package that Oregon received. Garrett also was a catalyst for the national lobbying effort that has become the Nonprofit Professional Theatre Coalition which helped to lobby for and secure the Shuttered Venue Grant Funds from the federal government. Garrett’s forté and passion is fostering and developing new work, including those that adapt and devise new ways of performing the classics. She has directed and produced the world premieres of many well-known and important playwriting voices of our time, including Katori Hall, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Dominique Morriseau and Aziza Barnes. Her credits at OSF include directing a beautifully successful production of Christina Anderson’s How to Catch Creation and producing the world premiere of Karen Zacarias’s The Copper Children. Prior to her appointment at OSF, Garrett served as the acting artistic director for Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company (DCPA) during the $66 million organization’s 18-month leadership transition. During her tenure, she produced a very provocative Macbeth, which became the most successful production in the Space Theatre’s 40-year history. She also initiated and negotiated the first co-world premieres in ten years for two DCPA-commissioned plays—The Great Leap with Seattle Repertory Theatre and American Mariachi with The Old Globe. Additionally, she was former associate artistic director of CalArts Center for New Performance.
David Schmitz (Executive Director) became OSF’s fourth Executive Director in September 2020. In just over a year at OSF, and working in partnership with Nataki Garrett, the leaders launched a new producing model, dramatically changed the organization’s membership structure to simplify and reduce the transactional feeling among donors, and reduced ticket prices to create a more accessible theatre that will increase access to current audiences and new audiences as we come out of this pandemic and into the next years of recovery. Schmitz has also hired 4 of the key department heads reporting to him (all of which were empty in September of 2020). Garrett and Schmitz have also launched a new strategic planning process, which should be completed around March of 2022. Schmitz worked at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for 15 years, serving as Director of Finance and Administration, General Manager, Managing Director, and Executive Director. At Steppenwolf, Schmitz was responsible at the executive level for strategy and execution of all fundraising, marketing, and business-related activities. His work ensured the world-famous ensemble had the resources and institutional support to achieve their creative ambitions in the present and the future. Prior to working at Steppenwolf, Schmitz was the General Manager at Lookingglass Theatre Company, Associate Artistic Director of Stage Left Theatre, and Business Manager at the entertainment agency Adair Performance. Schmitz has sat on the boards of the Theatre Communications Group, the League of Chicago Theatres, The House Theatre of Chicago and the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce, and prior to leaving Chicago was the President of the Producers Association of Chicago Area Theatres. Schmitz is a founding member of Enrich Chicago, a cohort of arts organizations working to end racism in Chicago arts.
